Celia's Lighthouse

By: Anne Molloy

What living in a lighthouse off our New England coast might mean to a young girl is enterainingly set forth in a biographical book for juveniles about Celia Laighton Thaxter, an honest-to-goodness poet.  Celia spent her childhood, from the age of five at Isles of Shoals, which is off Kittery and Portsmouth, until she was married.  That is the period covered by Anne Molloy in "Celia's Lighthouse."

The story opens with Father and Mother Laighton making up thier minds about accepting a position at this lighthouse, reckoning on its isolation and its storms.  The place of course, proves full of fascination.  It is picturesque, perils are exciting.  Salvaged packages are surprises.  The birds are a never-ending delight.  Tides play tricks on both girl and cow.

Celia's first poem is born there, and her romance.  There's a bit of symbolism that lifts the tale into deeper meaning, and the ending is a happy one. Beautifully illustrated by Ursula Koering, "Celia's Lighthouse" is a winner for adventure-loving lasses.
